  4.     In RHAPSODY IN AUGUST, three generations of a Japanese family
  5. contemplate a great and terrible event, the bombing of
  6. Nagasaki. But the milieu director Akira Kurosawa creates for
  7. their deliberations is small and serene: a farm where a
  8. grandmother, who witnessed the blast from afar and lost her
  9. husband in it, gently and indirectly informs her grandchildren
  10. about the past. And about the proper way to confront it -- with
  11. calm, unblinking acceptance. This is a part of their education
  12. their parents have neglected. For the middle generation, seeking
  13. economic advantage, especially with a branch of the family that
  14. has immigrated to the U.S. and prospered, has preferred to deny
  15. history's impact on their lives. It is touching to watch a bond
  16. being created between wise age and innocent youth and wonderful
  17. to experience the grace of Kurosa wa's art as he explores, with
  18. a new simplicity, one of his preoccupying themes: man's
  19. inability to control, or even think coherently about, the mighty
  20. historical forces he so often and carelessly unleashes.
